The Weekly Pulse: No. 3
The one on my second week of vacation…things are tough without a laptop.
Thought for the Week:
Anybody else have the Olympic theme song stuck in their heads every day of every year (even non-Olympic years)?
No, just me…?
I LOVE the Olympics. There is honestly no other word for it. Starting yesterday until August 11, you will most likely see me engaging in some way, shape, or form with the Olympics 24/7 (ok probably not while I sleep…I have a somewhat strict 9:30 bed time). Whether I am watching on my phone, tablet, or TV, or I am simply just following some events on social media the Olympics will consume my life (sorry for those at my church, I promise work will get done).
This past week, I have done nothing but look forward to the Olympics with anticipation. I have been watching Olympic Trials for several sports throughout the summer and even before that for some events. I am beginning to get familiar with athlete stories, and looking for that obscure sport that will become my ride or die (honestly thinking kayak cross or possibly even breaking).
Either way, the anticipation of this last week, actually has me looking forward to returning to work, because I know I have the Olympics to keep me company!
Week in Running
This week has been about working my way back into running. I slowly but surely, got my mileage into a good base zone (this is a note about the number of miles by the way, not my pace).
I kept the miles in my easy range, and my main goal was to mainly log the miles.
Looking towards the fall, I know I have two half marathons, and so these easy miles where it is more about numbers than pace are good to get back into the mental head space of running. As this newsletter comes out, my long run mileage for this week will be a relaxing 8 km (5 miles…for those unfamiliar I do train in kilometers).
Next week: The theme stays the same…LOG THE MILES.
What does your next week look like in terms of movement?
Again while I do call it a run club it is more about movement of any kind rather than just running. Leave a reply in the weekly movement chat on the subscriber chat.
Run Build Grow Podcast
Here is where the struggles of having an iPad as my mobile computer. While it is awesome in a lot of ways, I have not quite perfected full length podcast audio editing yet (GarageBand is really funky for iPadOS). So unfortunately, no new episode this week. However, as I am starting to do, I am enjoying sharing some of the stuff you may not have been around for if you are newer to the run club.
This week I am going to re-share the episode that got it all started. The first episode was with the person who really sparked and inspired this thought of running and community in my mind as a podcast idea. Check out this episode with Melissa Moser, and see how she created a running community focused on helping and serving others. Listen here:
Then this episode with another running doing great work to support the community around her, here is my conversation with Robin Telfian of Shood in Richmond, VA:
I am always looking for fantastic stories to share through the podcast. If you have a great story of community running or know someone email me or share the podcast or this newsletter with friends.
On A Long Run
Without my regular podcast episode coming out this week, I decided to be extra generous and get a couple of running related posts out so you wouldn’t miss out on awesome RunninRev content. This week I published two posts that I hope you’ll enjoy:
The first about Easy Runs and their importance in our training:
The second one talks a bit about despite how much those sweaty summer runs suck, they have a tendency to pay off when the weather cools down in the fall:
Deep in the Archives
Since I wrote that article about easy runs, I have revisited this post and thought a bit deeper about our language in life. I have unlocked this post for you to enjoy again, and be reminded about language as care for ourselves and others.
This post spoke to me so much this last week as I have been reflecting on my last two weeks of vacation. Honestly, I feel like I have learned a bit since writing this almost one year ago, but also feel like, in re-reading it, I still have a lot of growth needed. Luckily life is a journey and I am growing every day. Check out this article I published last year on “The Busyness of Burnout.”

RevFlections
Sermon
One final week without a RunninRev weekly sermon. Next week on August 4 I will return to the pulpit at Beech Grove UMC. I am going to be beginning a new series about community and gospel hospitality using the book God’s Welcome by Amy Oden. I am excited for this series, and excited to share it in this community as well, because I think it will align well with the mission and vision for this “run club.”
Devotion
In this week’s devotion, I reflected on a very chaotic Monday. As I reflected on the events I remembered some unhelpful advice I used to receive and how my understanding of scripture has transformed over the course of my faith journey.
If you upgrade to a paid subscription you can get an extra devotion each week.
What you might expect this week:
This week is shaping up to be a busy week, and I am trying to decide what my content calendar for the week will look like. I am going to have some writings previewing some of my thoughts for track at the Olympics. It is probably going to be three posts, and I will most likely release them just on Substack, and send an email when they are ready to read.
I am also excited to have recorded an episode with the writer,
of Running Sucks 101. This was a fun one to record, and I wish I could have gotten it edited and in your podcast feeds yesterday. However, now I can let the anticipation build just a little bit longer. Plus I have two more recordings this week, and am starting to get episodes together for the rest of August.Final Note:
